Surfing Favela

"Surfing Favela" was shot with the aid of the communities of Cantagalo and Rocinha; the latter, with its 250,00 inhabitants, is considered the biggest slum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The documentary richly portrays the daily tasks of a group of surfers that helps the youth of their own community to discover in surfing, a direct bridge to freedom and nature. The characters spend their days between the hills and the sea, trying to turn their projects into a sustained reality. But with so many difficulties and opposing forces, their small actions become nothing but truly enormous feats. Their testimony is a new generation of young surfers who defy their environments limitations by choosing the surfing lifestyle over the never-ending cycle of local violence, corruption and drugs.

"Surfing Favela" was selected as a finalist for the THE FUEL EXPERIMENT, an international contest sponsored by Fuel TV(USA) - the only Latin American Project to reach the Top Ten. The contest grants young talents of the Extreme Sports Audiovisual Industry with the complete funds to make their films a reality.

Riding Giants

With Portuguese (Brazil) subtitle.

Riding Giants is an incredible documentary detailing the history and stories of three influential big-wave surfers, Gregg Noll, Jeff Clark, and Laird Hamilton. Stacy Peralta did an amazing job taking on the role of director and should be congratulated for doing such a brilliant job. The structure of the film is edited brilliantly and works perfectly with the narration, interviews, animation and surfing footage. The music soundtrack just adds to the overall satisfaction of watching this film, making Riding Giants brilliant viewing. Personal highlights include any of Greg Noll's comments, what with his straight-to-the-point frankness, Laird Hamilton's footage at Teahupoo, and the out-takes at the end of the movie. But really this entire film is one big, recommended highlight that comes highly recommended if you have the opportunity to see. It's a shame it isn't more well known, but it is a gem deserving of attention.

Bra Boys

Quem surfa sabe que existe um código de conduta em praias onde você não é da turma dos locais. E sabe também que arrumar um pequeno desentendimento na água pode terminar em uma grande confusão na areia. E, se não sabia, depois deste documentário vai ficar sabendo que se o qüiproquó for em Maroubra, na Austrália...

Sunny Abberton, o diretor, é um Bra Boy - como são chamados os surfistas locais de Maroubra. Em seu longa, ele mostra como a comunidade foi formada, os percalços pelos quais precisou atravessar e o apartheid social criado pelos efeitos da colonização inglesa. Os laços de unidade, de protecionismo e de solidariedade foram se fortalecendo ao mesmo tempo em que o grupo ganhava as páginas policiais dos jornais locais e, mais tarde, as pautas de redes internacionais de televisão. Pancadarias e desentendimentos com as autoridades locais eram uma constante nas areias de Maroubra.

O documentário explora justamente a fama de meninos encrenqueiros dos Bra Boys e o respeito que eles conseguiram no mundo do surfe não pela má reputação, mas por suas manobras e ousadia nas ondas. O centro do argumento são os três irmãos Abberton: Sunny, o diretor, que tenta manter a família sempre unida; Jai, que foi acusado de assassinato; e Koby, que ganhou projeção internacional em competições.

O complicado de "Bra Boys" é não haver ainda legendas em português. O filme foi lançado ano passado na Austrália, faturou bem e deve chegar ao Brasil só em 2009. Por isso, entender o inglês dos aussies, é uma tarefa difícil! Ainda bem que Russel Crowe, gladiador e narrador da história, tem um sotaque mais leve.

No mais, é um belo documentário de surfe. Há ondas gigantes, points arriscados (de verdade, impressionante!), contusões assustadoras e até uma divertida disputa pessoal de Koby com Kelly Slater.

One Track Mind

One Track Mind is 36 minutes of pure heart and guts. It’s a must see for any surfer interested in what goes on inside the minds of the top surfers on the World Tour (and those groms getting ready to make a run for it.) Directed by Chris Malloy and produced by Woodshed Films, the surfing flick focuses on the sheer determination, competitiveness (and board and fin preferences!) of surfers on the WCT, as well as up-and-comers. In one particularly cool moment during the film, various pros talk glassed-on fins versus a fin system. Everybody loves their glass, except for Slater, leading Dane Reynolds to remark: “He’s the best surfer in the world, with a fin system. Isn’t that weird?” One Track Mind is a perfectly balanced mix between interviews with top surfers, as well as footage of barrels, aerials and more barrels. The movie is anchored by the prescence of Rabbit Bartholomew and Kelly Slater. Bartholomew, President of the Association of Surfing Professionals, pays respect to surfers past and comments on surfers present such as Mick Fanning. Kelly Slater’s total domination of the pro tour is an underlying theme in this documentary as it seems every pro featured in the movie has something to say about his influence on them. For his part, Kelly Slater says in interview footage: “A one tracked mind is a good thing to have, at the right time.” The young guns featured in the movie seem to have taken that statement to heart, a point subtly made by Malloy and his team.

One Track Mind features interviews with Rabbit Bartholomew, Kelly Slater, Taj, Mick, AI, Parko, Dane Reynolds, Rob Machado, Sunny Garcia, Jordy Smith, John John Florence and footage of Tom Curren, Occy, Slater, Irons, Fanning, Burrows and Jordy Smith among others. While Slater is ever present in the minds of his fellow pros, Occy, and Tom Curren featured prominently as influences.

One Track Mind’s soundtrack is perfect for the film - not overbearing, and just makes you want to grab your board and go.

Depois de "Endless summer", na década de 60, clássico de Bruce Brown que trazia uma narrativa completamente diferenciada para os filmes de surfe da época, as produções do gênero deram uma boa esfriada. Poucas eram as películas sobre o esporte e a maioria delas mostrava apenas os surfistas em ação. O panorama começou a mudar recentemente, com belos documentários sobre o surfe - incluindo o brasileiro "Surf adventures". Porém, o melhor deles é, sem dúvida, esse aqui.

O argumento de "Zen and Zero" é sensacional!

Cinco austríacos viajam até Los Angeles para encontrar Allan Weisbecker, um surfista lendário que perdeu sua casa após uma ressaca e, para continuar se sustentando, resolveu entrar para o ramo do comércio. Ele e seu amigo, Christopher, passaram a vender maconha. Um belo dia, eles abarrotaram uma lancha de erva colombiana da boa. Porém, a Guarda Costeira os pegou e o barco afundou. Após esse fatídico episódio, os dois amigos se separaram.

O tempo passou e Weisbecker virou escritor e roteirista da série televisiva "Miami Vice". Um de seus livros, "In search of Captain Zero", motivou os surfistas austríacos a fazer uma viagem até a Costa Rica para promover o encontro dos dois velhos amigos. Para os europeus, se o mar estivesse flat (sem ondas, para os leigos), no mínimo teriam uma boa reportagem.

Se o argumento por si só já vale, a parte técnica não fica para trás. Belíssima fotografia, enquadramentos espetaculares, trilha sonora excelente e o mais delicioso disso tudo: um texto sensacional! A busca pela onda perfeita e pelo Captain Zero, como Christopher ficou conhecido, também se transforma em uma narrativa contundente, com tiradas filosóficas, matemáticas, esotéricas e existenciais. Aos moldes do mestre Hunther Thompson e seu Jornalismo Gonzo.
